In the corner of my mind, there's a battered corkboard. It’s cluttered with snapshots of half-formed dreams and fragments of fleeting ideas that maybe I'll get to one day. Some of those images feel sharp and vivid, others fade with time.
In my mind, they remain nebulous and honestly that's where some of them should stay. But some dreams shouldn't be crowded on and fighting for attention.
This is why vision boards exist.
When something that lives in your mind becomes physical, great things happen.
To create a vision board is to put literal distance between your mind and your dreams. And when they become something tangible, held, or looked at every day they create clarity, clues to follow, and even miracles.
- A digital Notion board with carefully curated images and plans becomes a vision board of sorts.
- A no holds barred journal carries a similar magic but uses a different perspective.
- And there’s something extra special about making an old-school YMCA-esque vision board with scissors, glue, and a stack of magazines.
Whether digital or physical, a vision board is where creativity, intention, and destiny can converge.
The Science of Vision Boards
The simple act of choosing what goes on your vision board is a big first step. It forces you to clarify your ideals. What does living your dream really mean to you?
Is it sipping coffee on a quiet deck at sunrise? Exploring hidden coves? Hosting sunset dinners with friends? By defining these specifics, you’re not just dreaming... you’re mapping.
Your brain’s Reticular Activating System (RAS) is a network of neurons that acts as a filter for what gets your attention. Once you tell it what’s important, it starts noticing details, clues and opportunities you might’ve otherwise overlooked.
This is part of why vision boards work.
By repeatedly exposing yourself to the images, phrases, and symbols that represent your dream, you’re training your RAS to focus on opportunities that align with that vision.
Studies show that vividly imagining a goal activates the same neural pathways as physically working toward it. Special Forces assaulters and pro athletes use visualization to improve performance.
Your vision board operates on the same principle.
A Dance Between Destiny and Action
A vision board goes beyond deciding what you want although that in itself is a great accomplishment. How many of us don't really know what we want?
I'd argue it's more about opening yourself to what’s possible.
There’s a metaphor here for sailing. You can plot a course, check the wind, and set your sails but mother nature has her own ideas.
Your vision board is your ideal, but it offers no navigation. So the journey will take surprising turns.
I believe its a way of declaring to yourself and the universe that you’re ready. Ready to notice the serendipities, the clues and take action when the timing is right.
What may have started as a collection of images and words can quickly become a blend of conscious focus and unconscious belief. Science tells us they shape how we think, feel, and act. Spirit reminds us that they connect us to a current of destiny, possibility, that flows just beneath the surface of our everyday lives.
As you create your vision board, ask yourself: Am I ready to take the first step toward this dream? Because that’s where the real magic lies. Not in the board itself, but in what it inspires you to do.
